What a Calling Really Is |

Jon opened by pressing on the word itself. A calling is not a job we hand ourselves. It is a summons that comes from above us: "A calling is outside of you. It does not originate within you." |

He gave four marks of a true calling: it comes from someone over you, it fits how God made and equipped you, it does not bend to circumstances or popular opinion, and it is not reversible. "The one who called you gets to determine when you're done." |

He put his own calling on the line as an example: "if this church didn't have anybody I would preach at the door. I would preach. My preaching is not determined by how many people are here, because that's what God's called me to do." |

Ask Yourself
Most of us treat "calling" as something we discover about ourselves. What changes if you see it instead as an assignment handed to you by God, one that does not quit when the crowd thins or the road gets hard?

Paul's High Calling: Grace, Mission, and Goal |

In verse 5 Paul says he received "grace and apostleship," and he never split the two apart. The same Christ who stopped him on the Damascus road and saved his soul also handed him his mission. As Jon put it: "God saved me and saved you for something." |

His mission was "to bring about the obedience of faith." Jon landed on this meaning: obedience that comes out of faith. "Faith is believing that what God has said is true and demonstrating it in action." A chair you say you trust is not really trusted until you sit down in it. |

The goal ran deeper than rescue. "The goal and the heartbeat for missions is so that there will be more worshipers of Yahweh." People are saved from hell, yes, but the aim is worship poured back to the King, for the sake of His name, among all the nations. |

Ask Yourself
When you pray for someone far from God, what are you really hoping for? Jon's challenge lands here: the deepest goal is not only keeping people out of hell, it is adding one more voice to the worship of God. Does that reframe who is on your heart this week?

Loved by God, Called to Be Saints |

Verse 7 names the Roman believers "loved by God." Jon walked through psalm after psalm on the steadfast love of the Lord, then landed on 1 John 3:1: "See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God." |

He warned that the world twists what love means, even calling the cross "divine child abuse." But the cross is love at its highest. "I love y'all, but I don't think there's someone in here that I would love enough to sacrifice my son for. I'm just not there yet. That's God's great love for us." |

"Called to be saints" means set apart. Not just saved and seated, but consecrated for a purpose. Jon pressed the question home: "Are you fulfilling your calling? Your calling may look different from a lot of others." |

Ask Yourself
If someone asked what you have been set apart for, would you have an answer? Jon said that if you do not even know where to start, that should bother you, not to shame you, but to stir you. Where might God be calling you to step in?

Grace and Peace, Your Deepest Need |

Paul's greeting, "Grace to you and peace," is no throwaway line. It names your two greatest soul needs, in order. Grace is God's unmerited favor: "there's nothing you could ever do to gain His favor." |

Peace is the Hebrew shalom, "the idea of all things as it should be. Things set aright." Faith in Christ does not end the heartaches and anxieties of this life, but it anchors your soul in the one place it can be put right. |

And the order matters. "None of us here have access to peace without grace." The daily peace you long for flows out of the favor God freely poured on you first. |

Ask Yourself
Where is your soul out of alignment right now: the stress, the discouragement, the frustration you carry into the week? Jon's counsel was simple and daily. Ask God for His grace, and let the peace you need flow from it. What would it look like to make that your prayer this week?
